Call For Papers | Second Workshop on Chinese and Comparative Economic History

Dates:August 4-5, 2025

Hosts: Department of Economics, University of Oxford and Center for Chinese Economic History, Tsinghua University with support from Department of History, School of Humanities, Shanghai Jiaotong University.



Following the successful inaugural conference of "Workshop on Chinese Economic History from a Comparative Perspective" held at University of Oxford on July 29-30, 2024, the co-organizers, Department of Economics, University of Oxford, and Center for Chinese Economic History, Tsinghua University, have decided to hold the second conference at Nuffield College, University of Oxford, on August 4-5, 2025. Professor Stephen Broadberry from Oxford University and Professor Denggao Long from Tsinghua University will serve as co-chairs of the conference.

Like our inaugural conference, we welcome submission on all aspects of Chinese economic history as well as other regions of the world especially in a comparative and global perspective. However, in light of the importance of Institutional Economics and New Economic History highlighted by this year’s Nobel awards, we encourage submissions that examine the role of institutions in shaping economic outcomes over time, with a focus on innovative methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches.

·Notification of Acceptance: April 15, 2025

·Invitation Letters Issued by the Department of Economics, University of Oxford for Visa Processing: Mid-April, 2025


Conference Organization:

Participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and other expenses. The organizers will provide 3 meals and coffee/tea drinks during the conference.
